The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act of 2009 affirms the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all Corporation programs and volunteer sectors. The Act also calls for a dramatic future expansion of new opportunities for Americans of all ages with disabilities to serve and the potential for the creation of new inclusive programs.

The Trainer Development Institute will develop the capacity of participants to recruit, support, and retain members and volunteers with disabilities in Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs with a special emphasis on how we will work together to support the vision of the Serve America Act.

Through hands-on learning, participants will learn how to effectively develop the capacity of others on topics including disability law, legal responsibilities, access, Universal Design, reasonable accommodations practices, partnership development with disability organizations, inclusive recruitment strategies and management, and effective supervision of members and volunteers with disabilities. Institute materials will serve as references and will assist participants to effectively master disability inclusion management responsibilities. Please register today as space is limited.

Please contact the National Service Inclusion Project at nsip@umb.edu with any questions regarding the Trainer Development Institute.

Announcing a three day Disability Inclusion Trainer Development Institute

The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act will advance the inclusion of individuals with disabilities as members and volunteers in all current and future national service and volunteer sector programs. When: December 7, 8 and 9, 2009

Where: Albuquerque, New Mexico

Registration Fee: 100.00 early registration before November 18, 2009
150.00 registration after November 19, 2009

Other Costs: Nightly Hotel Rate is 81.00

WHO: This training will benefit those who are or plan to be responsible for the management and implementation of disability inclusion initiatives at an organization, program, volunteer agency or Commission. Participants from Senior Corps, AmeriCorps State and National Direct, Learn and Serve Programs and the volunteer sector are invited to attend!

This intensive, hands-on training will enhance the capacity of participants in two skill levels:

Level I: Basic disability inclusion training content and activities will target inclusion managers who need to conduct inclusion presentations but have had little or no experience conducting disability inclusion training. Using adult learning principles, attendees will learn how to effectively impart knowledge on disability law and legal responsibilities, access, Universal Design, reasonable accommodations, inclusive recruitment strategies and inclusive management and supervision.

Level II: This interactive training via hands-on activities, small and large group discussion, sharing of effective practices and peer teach-backs will enable trainees to further develop and demonstrate their competency to address progressively more complex disability inclusion concepts, issues and challenges. Attendees will strengthen their knowledge base of disability concepts, advance skills to develop strategic partnerships, refine their capacity to research and analyze disability inclusion issues, increase their ability to address complex questions regarding access and accommodations, and learn to appropriately and leverage community resources. Attendees must be graduates of past NSIP Training of Trainers workshops or similar learning experiences.

Each attendee is required to complete an application before being enrolled. This application process will assist you in determining which level will enhance your capacity as a disability inclusion manager within your organization, program, volunteer agency or Commission.
